It's been quite obvious GameMaker has become more and more corporate and commercial as it's gone on, and here they are dropping support and forcing everybody to their new shiny expensive version.
You won't be able to keep that old version forever. You'll have to switch when operating systems no longer run your old version within five or six years. But if you learned a programming language you could keep it for a lifetime.
