It has been decided some time ago MFGG won't be getting any subforums. Kritter's right when he said Help would clash with Developer Discussion, because essentially the two are the same, with Developer Discussion only covering a wider area. Developer Discussion already is there for people who are stuck somewhere and need help, so a Help forum would have to be a subforum which is pretty much out of question.

With a name like Developer Discussion though, it's not exactly made clear as to whether or not you can ask for help there. I always view it as a place for people to discuss aspects of making games foremost, with the occasional topic asking for help. Perhaps it needs a rename to something that makes it more obvious. Something like "Development Help and Discussion". Something to think about heading towards MFGG3. Doesn't solve the problem of that forum serving dual purposes though, as it is it's a bit of a cluster of categories in the one forum.

As for adding rules on requests, that's something you'd probably need to PM VinnyVideo or another admin about and have them discuss it.

Generally speaking, people shouldn't be requesting stuff at all on the mainsite, unless the submitter specifically asks for requests (or if the request is very simple).

On the forums, the Development Discussion board permits requests for graphics, music, or other game resources. We expect that requesters be willing to do some work on their own, though. Requests to "make my entire game for me" may end up getting locked.

What Vinny said. Nobody wants to complete a request that was made by someone that has no proof of work. To be honest, I wouldn't help someone who ask for things that has nothing in return. It's like I build a spacecraft out of gold and propell it to a massive black hole.

Showing your proof of contribution/work will gain a better trust for those who wants to help you.

I think nothing is wrong with requesting stuff. But you always request something you don't need. That's just annoying, 90% of your comments are requests. Just request something you need, or want to use. It's pointless to request random stuff.
And a request forum? That's not necessary at all. It also would be full of random pointless requests.

I think I agree with what Kritter said. Whenever I saw the old "Help" forum I knew exactly what to use it for. Developer Discussion, ever since the first day I saw it, felt far too serious and specific for what MFGG is. Any thread I've ever felt like posting in Developer Discussion I'd rather have posted in Gaming, Help, or General Chat. I guess if our community were gigantic, that forum would be more useful. But seeing as we're all MFGGers, talking about MFGG stuff in General Chat feels pretty organic to me.

The biggest thing though, for me personally, is that the name "Developer Discussion" takes away a lot of the fun of it. I remember back when we'd talk about fangames, level design, or games in PPP and General Chat. It was always unexpected and fun, just like raw, organic conversation. I think I'll always like big, vague forums more than strict, narrow ones.

A lot of the serious naming conventions came from wanting to make the place more fangame focused. At the time I suppose I wasn't too against that idea but I wasn't a big fan of the loss of soul or serious tone of the forum sections and especially the new names.

I've been loosely and vaguely campaigning to get a few forums renamed back to things like "The Arts Board" instead of "Graphics and Audio" as I always felt it better represented that all forms of art is good to show off here, not just that which is to be used in fangames.

There's a difference between asking for a coding help vs "hey make these sprites or game for me".
I've designed Mavericks that would be in a Mega Man X fangame and I would love to ask for someone to make sprites of them for me. But unless I had a game to show, no one would probably do something that intensive for basically no point.

There's honestly no need for rules for requesting things. Anybody is free to accept/decline any request, and request bombardment is covered by don't spam.

This I especially agree with. It seemed a lot more lively and human that way. But I guess, in the end, it all depends on whether or not everyone wants the MFGG forums to be more of a resource, or more of a community.

The main site is for resources, the forums are the community that surround it.

If I post a game with a demo and screenshots in the Development Showcase and say something like "btw if anyone is willing to help with sprites or level designs that'd be great and I'd put you in the credits" would that be fine?

I don't see any harm on that.

Since we're going off topic, I might as well make a few statements:

YES! I am muted on the website!

YES! I did make an alternate account by name of DukeyDukeyDoo!

YES! I'm the one who likes to make requests on the main website itself!

So what's gonna happen to me now, huh?

Unless if there's a rule stating that, I won't believe it. :nope:

But I will keep submitting sprite sheets to the site, but the descriptions I'll put in won't have anything nice to say at all.

If there's one way of communicating to people, it's through descriptions.
