Star Soldier Nova is a tiny vertical-scrolling arcade game I made for the Super Comp. Use your laser gun and jet booster to collect fuel cores (purple rocks) while avoiding enemies. Collect them all and return to your ship before time runs out! See how many stages you can clear before your game is over!

Controls:
Left/Right - move
Up/Down - menu cursor
A - Jump/menu selection
S - Shoot
Q/ESC - Pause
F3 - toggle screen size (1x,2x,3x,fullscreen)
F9 - take screenshot

GAME A:The standard difficulty
GAME B:Harder difficulty where order that the stages load is random.

Special thanks to Vimimin for acting as composer for this project!


(This game will actually also appear in War Girl as a subgame. This is why I made this huge border around the game, so that it will easily fit War Girl's resolution when the time comes.)

Controls are a step up from Khimera. The art is incredibly simple and forgettable. The music is alright. The sound effects are lazy.

6/10 it's ok

I don't remember Khimera's controls well but to be honest these controls are far from good.

The biggest problem is that there's no friction in the air whatsoever, while I'm perfectly capable of turning around while airborne very quickly. I find it impossible to land next to enemies on platforms. I can hardly make subtle adjustments to my movement due to how fast I turn around and the fact there's no friction doesn't help it.

Another issue I'm having is that you can't turn around to shoot into the other direction mid-air. I know it's probably done for added challenge, but it felt more like a needless restriction than challenge to me. Running into walls from the side also doesn't cancel the momentum, so once you're no longer blocked by a floor in front of you, you regain all your speed. Probably a bug, though I'm not sure, but it's throwing me off.

The idea behind the midair restrictions were to utilize the screen wrap to be successful. Since you can shoot through the edge of the screen to hit enemies on the other side, the idea is to use that to attack enemies behind you. I thought it would be more demanding than simply letting you turn around.

I will absolutely concede that not being able to turn around will be frustrating at first, but I hope its understandable that I wasn't going for "needless difficulty spikes" and actually had some thought behind it.

As for frictionless midair motion, I could probably tweak this if people are finding it too frustrating.

Not stopping after hitting a wall is a bug. I'll probably get on that.

I've uploaded a new version that fixes the bug where walls don't stop your momentumn. I also made it so you slow down a bit when you let go of the arrows midair.
