He might be referencing the
"M A R I O" Super Mario World creepypasta hack, which was, in fact, a real hack, and if I'm not mistaken, the guy who started the thread for that hack on Super Mario World Central was named Adam. I might be wrong, I'm running this all off of memory.
Regardless, I'm not sure how well that experience will translate over to a fangame. The M A R I O hack had a lot of subtly disturbing content, along with a gory and vague hidden image file. It was the fact alone that it WAS a hack that made it more frightening. Modifying a real game that many people hold dear to their hearts is a much easier way to strike a chord when they play it and find a lot of unexpected, unsettling scares based on afterthoughts alone. It just doesn't work for a fangame.
