You thought we'd never release this, but here we are to prove you wrong:
Winner of several MFGG Awards, including "Most Anticipated", "Best Graphics", "Best Engine" in 2010 and more, this game is finally coming to you, and will now ultimately destroy all your hopes because it definitely won't live up to the hype!

Midas Machine will be released in Episodic format.
Every one or two months from now on, we will release the next chapter.
Important: It is only possible to play a chapter if you have played all previous chapters, so please do not delete your saves!
How the new chapters will integrate into your previous download(s) will be worked on during production of the next episode.

One thing is certain though: New chapters will upgrade your game, not be separate games, so you will be able to visit old places again, and all your progress there is saved. In the end you will have one big game.

The episodic structure serves the purpose of finishing piece by piece and having you not wait too long.
If everything goes according to plan, the final chapter, and with that the full big game, will be released for NCFC 2011 (although considering our previous "plans" I wouldn't count on that ;) )

That said, here is the

Download
Chapter 1

Please download, play, enjoy, and report any bugs or glitches you may find.
Fixes will happen for chapter 2, if bugs are not critical.
If they're gamebreaking, a fix will be released sooner.

Thank you for reading, and now go and play the friggin' game you've been waiting for so long! ;)
- Chaoxys, Guinea and the rest of Team Midas

Ofcourse not
I had a test and I enjoyed it so much! :D I could play this all day!

1 question...are the sprites you used available? You don't have to give them which is propably why I can't find them anywhere.

As I said any regular Mario platformer fan would enjoy this wonderful masterpeice. ;)

Little graphic bug

A way to exit a level would be nice in case I get stuck
Also: when you finish talking to sign underwater, in makes the enter water sound, a bit odd

But this game is amazing

Huh... Not sure how I missed that but I assure you that graphic glitch will be gone in chapter 2.

As for the exiting levels thing, I have to agree. I'm sure Guinea could whip something up in the next chapter.

Sorry, none of the graphics have been released, although I'm planning on possible releasing what I've made (so far about 85% of the graphics) after the final chapter.

I already downloaded and played it. I am trying right now to find the Golden Mushrooms. It's a bit tricky without Wario & Waluigi.

Wow. That was quite impressive! A few bug reports/suggestions (none game-breaking by any means):

  • The message texts go pretty slowly, at least for my taste. Giving players a way to adjust text speed on the options menu, like in most RPGS, would be a great addition.
  • When you finish some levels, Mario begins walking to the right but stops when he hits the edge of the screen. This looks a little sloppy. Either make the room transition a little earlier or make it so Mario doesn't stop at the room boundary.
  • It might be better if rolling Koopa shells disappeared after going too far outside the activation area. One shell rolls through the greater part of the level in Toad Town, and it feels kind of unnatural.
  • BGM.DLL generates an error message log in the main folder that says "Failed to get playing status of song - Invalid song ID or filename." It gives src/bgm_play.c as the offending file. This didn't seem to affect anything, though.

Also, a few grammar lapses:
  • Captain Syrup uses the word "sweetheart" twice, but one time it's misspelled as "sweatheart."
  • Peach says Syrup is "not to underestimate," but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be "not to be underestimated."
  • And if you're a real grammar Nazi, "alright" is technically wrong and should be replaced with "all right."

Feel free to give credit for this if you want to, but it's not essential.

I actually laughed at "sweatheart" - should absolutely be kept. It was hilarious, no matter if it was or wasn't intentional.

So I downloaded and tried it out earlier today, and I must say... this is pretty superb. For the first chapter, this game feels really polished!.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying it and I'm glad you are finding these mistakes now because it makes it easier for us to fix in chapter 2, and by us I mean Guinea.

Also, to avoid having you guys spend hours trying to get all the gold shrooms, I'll tell you this. With the current characters, you can only get 14 of them.

Also, as an added bonus, There is a secret item in chapter 1 that only a single player can get. It's a very rare item that it well worth your trouble to find as it could really save you in a dangerous situation, but you must be careful as there is a very limited amount in the game.

If anything, you've exceeded my expectations. Here I was expecting another "been there done that" fanmade Mario platformer (if not an exceptionally well made one, but nevertheless) but what we got is something that serves as both a marvelous tribute as well as its own unique entity. And I freakin' love it. I've been in the fangaming business for over a decade now, and very few have ever stuck with me as something truly great. However, nothing here struck me as truly impressive until now. Seriously, keep up the good work you guys. I mean it. If this ends up canned, I'll never EVER forgive you guys. ;D

I only have one nag. And that would be the bosses. Let me just say that they are very well made, however, considering this is the first world, they are WAY too difficult. I mean, the Tanoomba is fine... once I figured out you were supposed to jump on it after it lands in the pit. But the Skull Kid thing-a-ma-bob... honestly, I think that should have taken three hits instead of four. I mean, the fight itself is brilliant, but once you get to the fourth hit, the memorization gets to be a bit much to take in. It was at this point I felt a huge ramp up in difficulty from the third hit. As for Captain Syrup... actually a fitting difficulty to end the chapter with. By the way, this fight was probably easier than the first two. ;P The only problem here is the final hit - I just can't seem to stomp on her without getting hit myself. Might want to fix the collision detection there.

Otherwise... beautiful. I always kinda wanted to help out with the project, but now I REALLY want to help out with the project. Outside of that one boss idea, I mean. ^_^; But yeah, again, don't you dare can this. OR I WILL FIND YOU. Seriously, my favorite Mario fangame yet. =)

Thats odd, I've never had trouble with collision detection on Bean (Bean is the plant conductor boss. Get it? "Beans beans the musical fruit." Fruits are plants.... nvm).

Anyways, as far as bosses go, I think the difficulty is justified since the player will most likely have a large surplus of extra lives since you only use them to return to a check point. Either way I had talked to Guinea about possibly adding a feature where if you use the chat feature on the DSe during a fight, Gadd with give you hints and tips on beating the boss.
