Thank you to SuperArthurBros for letting me start this!

Anticipating the great success of Sonic Mania, Nintendo is also looking to their fans for game development. The project, Super Mario Bros. 4, will be released for the Nintendo Switch and feature a new style of NES-compatible graphics. Entrants contending for the spriting role are advised to submit their sample assets at their local Mario fangaming galaxy by January 28th, with voting to commence immediately thereafter.
There you have it, folks! Nintendo's asking us for a new NES Mario style. At least, so says my highly reputable news source. But the challenge stands nonetheless! Good luck; I'm excited to see what you'll all make!
Oh, and here are the oft-confused NES restrictions: Spoiler:
Use colours from this palette:
For tiles, (that is, anything stationary,) each 16x16 area must use a set of three colours, plus a background colour that is the same for all tiles. There can be a maximum of four different sets of tile colours on-screen at once.
Sprites are almost the same, but are not fixed to a grid, their size is 8x8 instead of 16x16, and the background colour is replaced by transparency. Also, sprites can (but do not often) layer over each other to allow for more colours in an 8x8 area.

Uh, shouldn't this be named "Sprite Competition #1 2017", bigpotato? Also, I noticed that you forgot to add a deadline to the competition. The theme sounds really interesting, though. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing what will people make for this competition!

This is the deadline, I think.

Good catch! It would seem my mind hasn't made the transition from 2016 to 2017 yet. Thanks for fixing it, DJ Coco.

* Incredible nightmare ensues *
That's great! It's always interesting to see 8-Bit stuff from future Mario games. I don't know if I'll have time to make an entry, but it'll definitely be cool to see what other people come up with.

Ooh, I'm interested in joining this one. I'm very curious of what others will submit.

I wanted that to be my title but the code is too many characters. Oh, and I just realized that it doesn't even work anyway either. What sort of witchcraft does this site use, using [color=___] instead of <span style="color:___;">???

The new sprites in Sonic Mania still use the original's style, whereas this is intended to be a completely new style. Also, edits are generally discouraged in sprite competitions.

"I am one valuable card"
Here is mine for the entry! The good ol' Goomba standing here staring at you... Does it matter for the size of the goomba?

I don't believe this counts
Unless you're using a lot of sprite layering, but that would flicker like hell

Just what is the deal with Paper Mario? I mean really! You've got these huge sprites, all this shading, it's a wonder it doesn't crash the game! Just how do they do it? Really!

The size of the goomba is fine, but it's not really feasible to display in such a game as the one proposed. I would advise reducing the number of colours.
