Rap Beats

Well, you love them or you hate them. No matter what the case, since this happened, I think the theme I've picked for the music competition will test everyone's skills, if not their mental stability.

To win this competition, you will have to be able to compose a killer beat similar to these Knuckles themes from Sonic Adventure 2:

The winner of this competition will have their beat mastered with lyrics rapped by me! Typing up some lyrics will help score points as well...

The deadline for this competition is March 01! Good luck!

If there is a mod here, can this be moved to the Graphics and Audio topic?

Well... this is quite the... interesting competition.

Not sure if I want to compete in it or not, but I'll see what I can do XD

Rap beats can be difficult to work with. Because they're pretty empty without rapping over top of them.
As in, you can't really have a melody in your song because too many things would make it distracting if there was an actual rapper.

Maybe I can give an opportunity on music making this time. Since I like bunch of raps.

The other question that I have about this is competition is how we should actually make it. I mean, pretty much all rap songs use samples, but surely we can't do that.
Making it all from scratch can be a challenge, especially for people that are more accustomed to making traditional video game music.

EDIT: Gah, I may as well give it a shot, if time permits. A challenge is never a bad thing.

Some claps and kick samples I got from LMMS but rest of them are modified squares, triangles, and saw-waves.

i gotta say, what you have so far is a pretty badass track. i really like the melody from the saw wave, if i'm calling it the right thing. it's repetitive, though that's not that bad of a thing for the genre, and it definitely needs more percussion. i know it's a wip, but it's still good.

I've heard of all of these before, because I have a real copy of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the GameCube. Meteor Herd is my favorite of the bunch (although I'm typically not into rap... still, though, sometimes they catch on, so even I'm not completely immune...). The biggest reason why I usually dislike rap is usually due to the lyrics (which has overall killed my interest).

I'm making something but, I'm just not sure if it really fits into the whole rap genre. I'll keep working on it and post what I got later.
EDIT: Oh yeah and I'm making the whole thing using instruments from Yoshi's Island. It actually doesn't sound all that bad.

I'm in! I've got myself one entry ready to go. Trying not to take the material too literally, as if I were to do so, I most likely would have ended up remixing Meteor Herd. Plus, I'm trying for a non-generic approach, having, in my perspective, heard too much of the same type of rap with the same tempo and the same notation.

Treasure Trove Wrappin'

The only note that I have is that it is somewhat designed to loop back to the start rather than end (considering those four were video game music to begin with).

I do .ogg instead of .mp3 when it comes to audio (this is because my browser doesn't support playing back HTML5 audio using .mp3 since I use Firefox... plus, it seems to be more supported than .mp3 based off of the HTML5 test results, although to me, it looks like it could be a toss-up).

The only other rap song that I have ever caught on to other than Meteor Herd is actually the DK Rap from Donkey Kong 64. That one is the only rap song that I have even caught on to the lyrics.

This was quite a challenge for me, given that I don't listen to hiphop at all. I also decided to try something new and I made all of my percussion samples from scratch (started with a straight 440Hz wave and modified it until I got the right sound).

My intention was to make something that sounds like it could easily be rapper over, given the theme. While I quite like both the other entries, to my ears, they didn't sound like something that would work as well with a rapper.

I would really appreciate any crits that you may have. Especially about the the bassline (or anything, really) because I'm not sure it sounds super hiphop-y, and I think it may take away from the rest of the song.

Well this is a first for me. I've never made any rap songs before so it was certainly a learning experience, I guess.

If you didn't notice, I only used instruments from Yoshi's Island. Why? Why not? This probably won't be my final entry, I may decide to work on it a little more.

You should stop the low kicks end a little earlier. Early on in the song it kind of beats over and over a little too much. It sort of sounds like you're spamming it in the background. Try making some patterns with it instead of filling it for every however beats. I can't really explain it too well, I hope you get what I'm saying. Other than that it sounds good!

I'm basically joking around, but if this manages to win something I will be thoroughly shocked and honoured.
