Final Voting in progress!
As there are only 4 entries this time, Top 5 Voting is not necessary.
Instead please vote for your favorite out of the games from this
Download-All-At-Once-Pack™

Final Voting ends when the 22nd of April has passed everywhere on the planet.

Without further ado, I present you K16's Minigame Competition theme.

K16 wrote:
Hello, and welcome to the first Minigame Competition under the new system!

I just want to extend a huge congratulations to the entries of the previous music competition; I was blown away by the sheer quality of the works and how professional they were in standard. Kudos to you all!

So let's get down to business; the theme of this competition is...

AUDIO!

Image

Audio is a huge part of video games all around; especially in iconic games such as the Guitar Hero series, Audiosurf, Rez, the SingStar series, the Dance Dance Revolution series and many more!
Sadly, there are few fangames for the Mario series revolving around the idea of audio, so it is your job to make the perfect game for this!

So, what needs to be done?
In order to qualify for a valid entry, your minigame must adhere to a few points of criteria...
. Your game must be focused on the idea of audio.
Audio is simply not just music, it can be a number of other things such as, but not limited to, sound effects and voice acting.
. Your game does not need to simply be a rhythm game.
Be creative! We don't need Guitar Hero #8,325! Your game can be anything from finding a radio that plays music in a house to pressing a button when you hear a sound - it does not have to be a simple rhythm/dancing game.
. Your game does not have to be strictly from the Mario universe, but it is encouraged.
. Other than that, your game must adhere to the standard MFGG Minigame Competition rules.

The competition ends on 19 April. Entries can be posted as long as there is a timezone somewhere on Earth that is still on that day!

That is all! Hop to it, and let's see some fantastic games !!

May the odds be ever in your favor!

That is a very cool theme, I still don't have any ideas for it, though.

Fraid not, the game has to be made on your own.

Out of curiosity, are we allowed to use pre-existing engines/code bases that are released to the public? In the competition rules, it's pretty vague, with the only definite restriction is not using a previous entire game as a base. I wanted to know before I started searching for a base engine (I wanted to save myself the time it would take to make it myself...).

You can't use something like the hello engine, if that's what you're asking.

I've got a great idea for this. And ya know what? I think I'm gonna contact someone to make some above-decent graphics for it, because this idea is pretty (somewhat) inventive!

You can't use something like the hello engine, if that's what you're asking.

Ah, okay, I was going to look and see if there was a basic platforming and SM64 star collecting engine (there aren't enough SM64 styled fangames to my knowledge). I'll see if something exists and ask if it would be acceptable.

EDIT: Well, as far as I can tell, no base engine exists. Oh well, it won't take me that long to get the base (I guestimate 2 days at the absolute max), and I get to use good ol' Java (though I may try and learn Javascript just because I have to work from scratch anyway, time will tell...)!

I'd join, but I can't think of anything that isn't time consuming. I wanted to have fun making use of some of the things I've been working on.

----
GravityGames, you can use some non-game related engines. Collision, animation, dialogue systems and the like are fine. Engines that offer the ability to actually make an entire game with are not (Hello Engine, CatezeeYs, Uhh supernova's engines, etc). An engine that allows full platforming or handles collecting items/stars seems like a no to me, but I could be wrong.

^Like TSG said, do not use complete engines. Collision code is ok, but going as far as to have a finished SM64 engine is definitely too much for MGCs.

^There are so many sound based elements in official Mario games.
Think of the musical notes from Super Mario Galaxy.
Or how each next red coin in Mario 64 makes a higher pitched noise than the previous.
Or how in NSMB the enemies react to certain musical cues.
Or how in the Rayman games, collecting a string of lums/tings gives you a small melody.
Or how Mother 3 has a rhythm based fighting system in the RPGs where listening to the music gives you an advantage.
Or think about Elite Beat Agents.

Game Maker Studio, 7 and 8 have on top of that many functions to handle 3D sound in space.

It's called "WAKE UP BEFORE YOU GET KILLED, MINIONS!"
You have to ROAR to wake up the sleeping goombas before they fall into the lava, but let the toads die.
