Complementary colors are colors that...well complement each other. For example, Blue and Orange, Red and Green, purple and yellow. They're on the opposite sides of the color wheel, and the best way to darken a color is to actually add more of it's complement. Look at my avatar to see what I mean
Speaking of lights and darks, values are just different shades of a color. Maroon is a darker value of red, and pink is a lighter value.
Sorry, art student. Anyway, I suppose I should ask if these have to be Mario based or not, that seems rather vague to me at this point.
