Complementary colors are colors that...well complement each other. For example, Blue and Orange, Red and Green, purple and yellow. They're on the opposite sides of the color wheel, and the best way to darken a color is to actually add more of it's complement. Look at my avatar to see what I mean

Speaking of lights and darks, values are just different shades of a color. Maroon is a darker value of red, and pink is a lighter value.

Sorry, art student. Anyway, I suppose I should ask if these have to be Mario based or not, that seems rather vague to me at this point.

Yeah, that's basically how I'd put it.
Also, the complementary color of a different color is slightly in its shadows.
Ex.:
When painting a red apple, a bit of green is painted in the core shadow and object shadow.

Three different colors, or three shades of one color, I imagine.

Also, WIP of my entry (screencaped, so spoilered for big image)

*sorry for the DP*

Nice drawing, but do you mind not tracing? I'd rather have the entries all clean instead of edited/referenced.

...I'm...hurt, actually. That's not traced. I posed the model in BrawlBox myself, and then worked with the vector lines, making alterations or adding lines where needed.

Here's with the colors turned off and the reference layer on as proof

I'll have you know that the posing is a major pain in the rear to do, and on top of that I still have shading and the like.

oh; that's rad, man! Forget what I said, you can do it.
The way you presented it looked like you had vectored a picture off google images, sorry I misinterpreted it~

Haha, frankly, I knew I'd be taking a gambit if I used this method. I was thinking to myself as I was adding the color flats "...wow, y'know, I'm probably going to be batting off people thinking I'm tracing for this."

Anyway, I should probably slow down XD I still have two weeks, and I'm eager to see what others are doing.

Permit me one question

Say I wanted to draw this with pen or pencil, and used hatching and cross-hatching for shading.

Do the hatches/cross-hatches count as shades and therefore a colour out of the three, or not?
