Congrats to everyone who entered the last comp. This one will give you a good amount of freedom so hopefully we see lots of entries. So whats the theme you ask? Well...

Theme: Take an animal from real life, and redesign it to fit in the Mario world. Take a look at Mario enemies. We have turtle like Koopas, crab like Side Steppers, jellyfish inspired Jelectros, and sooooo many more. (It doesn't have to be an enemy, it can be friendly).

One last thing. You CAN use an animal that already has a Mario world counterpart, just make sure yours looks different.

Comp ends in a week. Have fun.

I really like this theme.

I know I normally don't enter these, but I just might this time. :)

I'm afraid you may have missed the point. The idea is to take an animal from real life, and rethink it into a new Mario world creature. What you did was take a real life animal and sprite it in a Mario style.

Basically I believe he's saying the Husky resembled to closely to the actual animal instead of redesigning it into something that looks entirely different (but resembles a husky in a way) but fits the Mario style.

So you're saying my entry isn't valid because it still looks like a husky.

I do not understand.

EDIT- Better example
-What you should do-
Animal you picked as subject:

Re-imagined for the Mario world:

-What you shouldn't do-
Animal you picked as subject:

Entry:

Not trying to put down your entry by any means, it's just that the goal is to rethink what you see every day into something that would exist in the Mario world. Seriosuly though, if you just change some details to differentiate your husky sprite from a real husky, then it would be good to go. What details you could change I don't know, that would be up to you, but I do hope to see you try as I love the idea of using a husky as a theme.

Anyways, I can't really explain it any better than that.

Such a confusing theme. I used the Koopas from SMB3 as a reference by the way, and they look just like turtles.

Oh well, have fun guys. Sorry if I spammed your competition.

Look, there are plenty of differences, even things as simple as colors can make a difference. Taller cartoony eyes, longer head, stylized shell, ect. You sprited a husky, thats it. Consider this, huskies are associated with the cold, thats an easy concept to work off of, even if you simply wanted to change the colors around. My point is that, you don't have to go over the moon when redesigning things, it just has to look different, even if it's just the palette.

So all you want is to redesign a real life animal?

And that's why you told him that? Because he didn't "redisign" the wolf?

I don't remember these competitions being so nitpicky. A pallete swap for you then.

It's not nitpicky. The theme is to redesign an animal. You sprited an animal, no redesigning what so ever. Seriously, it's like if the theme was to sprite Mario and you sprited Luigi, it's close but no cigar.

When you said to "redesign it to fit in the Mario world" I thought I had accomplished that, since it is in the SMB3 style and looks quite nice next to the other SMB3 characters. It's not even like the proportions are realistic either, with its huge head and tail. It's just a little frustrating and I thought that the point of a sprite competition was to have fun, especially with what is supposed to be a broad theme.

True. I guess I wasn't taking the style and overall design, as in, how it would look if transferred onto paper in account. I think the problem was that I half expected to see people making huge design changes to animals, so seeing a more subtle one caught me off guard. Anyways, sorry for the trouble.
