I would like to congratulate Jazz and all who participated in our last competition. I'm surprised that I won, actually.

Today we are going to go back to the days of Super Mario Brothers 3 where Mario and his beloved brother saved the Princess for a third time.
ImageImageImage
Ah yes, remember when they had a wider assortment of clothes to aid them on their quest?
The Frog Suit
The Raccoon Suit
The Rhino Suit
..wait...that doesn't sound right. The Rhino wasn't in the game...
WELCOME TO YOUR ASSIGNMENT
You must come up with a brand-spankin new suit for the brothers to wear. May it be silly or awesome. Let your imagination flourish.
GUIDLINES:
  • Sprites can be in any style you want them to be. SMB3 was reference because it started the weird suit trend
  • When making a suit in an existing style, you may edit the character's normal sprite to fit the style. However, do not edit any part of an existing suit to make a new one. 100% new suits or die.
  • Mario and/or Luigi will do. Do not include Peach, Wario, etc. The Blue/Yellow Toads are also acceptable.
  • Sprites must have at least 1 frame of animation...lol
  • Have fun
Deadline is January 29, 2011, two weeks from today

Sounds cool, but I got a question. Suits have to be new/originaly made, which means I can't make already existing suits, right?
This should be fun, I'm in, and I hope for some challenging ideas. :D

Can the base for the sprites be any sprite we want? (seeing as the theme of the competition is the suits, not the base sprites)
Basically, I have this one frame mario sprite here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=12157 and I would like to make suits for it. Would this be allowed?
I know we aren't allowed edits or existing work in competitions, but if we wanted to make them in smb3 style, we'd have to edit the smb3 mario sprites...

I edited the original post to address this situation.

Oh, I have an idea...

Sheep Mario. The static wool allows him, or anyone wearing it to do mini wall kicks up a single wall by sticking to it with static cling. So, unlike a normal wall kick which requires 2 walls, this only takes 1 wall. You also no longer slide down the wall.

Also, I guess ground pounds give off static discharge.

I'm going to start spriting this asap.

EDIT-
Image
Might go back and work on the Toads some more, but I kinda like how Mario and Luigi came out, especially Mario.

I'm in this one as well. I've already got a good idea for this, too.

EDIT: Introducing the Turnip Mushroom. Still a WIP, seeing that I need an animation.

Image

With this item, Mario can spawn vegetables out of the ground and toss them at enemies (just like in that game you're probably thinking of right now).

By crouching and pressing the run button, Mario will drill into the ground and move around in it for a short time. This can be used to make a surprise attack on certain baddies or get past obstacles you can't normally jump over.

Oh it needs an animation? I'll start on that this thursday most likely. I'm on the last week of the semester so I'll be busy until then.

Block Suit
It allows you to form a block out of any enemy (besides Thwomps, Chain Chomps, Boos, etc) then you throw siad block like a hammer with the hammer suit, except it doesn't go as high and can be thrown multiple times, like in Super Mario World. After it hits the ground a few times, it will shatter like a brick block. Dunno if it should be a brick block or a used block.

Can we sprite the suit as an item like in SMB3 only or can we sprite as a mushroom also??
Cuz it's kinda bothering me at the moment cuz mine is a shroom and I dunno if it's allowed or not. ( Cuz I kinda don't like the little suit item.)

I don't see why it would be a problem. After all, you get the Bee Suit from a mushroom.

EDIT: I just read the sprite comp rules, and it turns out that they have to be 100% custom.
Mine's wasn't. Sorry!

It doesn't have to be 100% custom, just the power up itself, unless thats what you meant.

Ehh, what I'm saying is that the sprite comp rules say that you can't edit over someone else's styled sprites. And they have to be drawn pixel by pixel.

Fixed up Mario and Luigi a bit, and added projectiles.

I'm going to join with this:

Image

The Mouse Suit pretty much acts like a controlled Mini Mushroom, or the Pixl Dottie's ability. It lets the user shrink on command, and return to normal-size, as demonstrated by Mario:
