Sprite Competition #1: "Super" Donkey Kong
because delays are bad

but not actually "Super Donkey Kong", because that was the Japanese name for Donkey Kong Country.

In 1983 Nintendo released the critically acclaimed Mario Bros., starring plumbers Mario and Luigi ridding the streets of Brooklyn of various sewer critters.

In 1985, Nintendo took this formula and adapted it to a sidescrolling platform, thus creating "Super Mario Bros.". Big chucks of SMB's gameplay rely on Mario Bros.

This is an alternative world, in which Mario Bros. was not released. Assuming the last game to feature Mario was 1982's Donkey Kong Jr., he's now set to return in a sidescrolling platform adventure adapted from Donkey Kong/Donkey Kong Jr./Donkey Kong 3. That means no pipes, no bashing enemies from below, no turtles and no Luigi. What would it look like?

Your job is to make sprites that may be seen in a Mario sidescrolling game if Mario had remained a carpenter. What sorts of creatures and worlds would he face? Would he be more reliant on hammers? Would there be more oil and fire? Would the entire game take place in a city? Remember, Mario's trade skill is now Carpenty, not plumbing. Turtles don't bother him, but perhaps the likes of giant termites, woodpeckers or beavers would. You decide.

You can only use 1980s Donkey Kong games as a reference and it would be wise to keep it "Nintendo-y". Nintendo would make the game fun and colourful, and though theme large parts of the world on the idea of carpentry, wouldn't force Mario to get our a hacksaw and start using it. Mario vs. Donkey Kong and its sequel don't really count here. Mario would solve problems by jumping on wood... or something. Of course, he might find himself in an alternative mushroom kingdom, where fireballs have captured princesses.

Be imaginitive, whether that be mockups or useful sprites or whatever. It's fairly open ended but it's the first in a while and it would be nice to get as many entries as possible.

I'd have a picture of Donkey Kong 3 but MAME isn't being pleasant with it and I'm not sure if it would help that much.

Winners of course get to decide the next competition. I'll set a preliminary time limit of two weeks but seeing as that would bring us up to Christmas Eve, things might overlap a bit.

Good luck

Don't know why we have to restart from #1, but anyway it's great to see these back in action! Maybe I'll whip something up - probably some kind of "urban" enemy.

Also, are backgrounds OK? Because this seems like a great time to make a background entry.

sounds cool, but clarification, can it be in any style or is it only 8-bit?

So are we ONLY meant to use elements from the original game, or can we use any elements as long as they mix with the original themes?

For example, I have an idea but it involves Waluigi taking on the role of the antagonist. He'd be functioning in a fitting way, he'd just... not be DK. I mean, does the game have to have DK in it or just the feel of the arcade games?

It doesn't have to be in any specific "style", or feature things ONLY from the original arcade game.

Imagine it as the "next logical step".

Love the idea.

Though, would Mario necessarily have to be the protagonist here? He lost focus in the DK arcade series after the first game, and this is a world where Mario Bros. didn't keep his popularity up.

EDIT:On second though, I guess this'd probably be his "Super Mario Country", if it stars him. Bah, I'm thinking too hard.

Anyone can be the protagonist as long as it still fits with the theme.

I would advise that some form of Donkey Kong should be in there somewhere though, otherwise it wouldn't class as "Super Donkey Kong", if you catch my drift.

my entry
Image
basically this.
Super Donkey kong is a sidescroller, but there are a few differences from SMB to it.
first off the ? blocks are crates, inside the crates are either coins or Fruit, the fruit are the ammo Mario uses to take down the enemies, he can hold the fruit and when he comes in contact with the enemy, the enemy dies and the fruit dissolves.

There are 3 types of fruit the raddish which can only be used once, Watermelon which can be used twice, and a banana which can be used 3 times.

Oil drums are the Piranha plant replacement spouting fire, and ladders replace pipes in some circumstances. Barrels can be used as platforms too. Some of the enemies so far include a Termite, Fire thing and a Woodpecker that shoots eggs at you (think Lakitu)

What do you think is better:
8-bit or 16-bit?
I'll make an entry but I can't decide.

Edit:
16-Bit SMB3 is my choice:

Donkey Kong on the -> of the pic is a huge wip!

Sorry for the double post but:
Image
Which do DK do you think is better? The one which follows a lightsource or the pillowshaded one(which can be seen on Bowser of the original 16-Bit game). Oh and nine days without another post? Hmm.. and fruits are next plus other animations of Mario and DK. Pauline: Coming Soon. And when is this going to end?

My health situation (putting it lightly) is pretty crap right now. Without an extension, I don't know if I could finish.

As I promised, the fruits + Pauline!:
Image
Lemme explain:
1st Box: Mario... main protagonist. Saves Pauline from Donkey Kong.
2nd Box: The fire thing(don't know the name)... acts like a Goomba only this time, you can't jump on him.
3rd Box: Donkey Kong... main villain. Shall be defeated by Mario
4th Box: Old Version Of Pauline.
5th Box: New, better-looking version of Pauline.
6th Box: Fruits(tomato(?), mango and banana), They help you in-game.
If this ends tomorrow, I might need an extension of 3 days to finish. I still need to make more enemies mainly Snapjaw and co.

Going to extend this to new year because we're running low on entries (which is somewhat understandable considering we're running a much smaller forum at a time where people are busy with other things).

Let's not make a habit of extending these, but since it's Christmas, an extension makes very good sense.

My apologies for not finishing my entry in time: Chemotherapy had me sick as a do-...pretty ill. I felt too sick to work on this most of the last few weeks, and by the time I started feeling well enough to draw, I lost interest.
