This guide is intended to help those who aren't really familiar with how can they share their art and music over here, and as a replacement for the Useful Stuff guide that is made by Black Squirrel. While it might be still useful in some areas, most of the links that are shown in that guide are down, decreasing the usefulness value of the guide (which is why it was locked and stored in the archives).

If the formatting in your posts doesn't work as the guide intends them to be, then you probably had BBCode disabled in your posts. If so, then you must enable it. You can do this by unchecking the "Disable BBCode" option, which can be found when you are making a post, below the message body.

Hosting Sites

Art and music are hosted on a certain site, so they can be shared all over the internet. There are many different hosting sites out there, but here is a few hosting sites that I recommend for you:

For art, I recommend:

http://imgur.com/
https://www.dropbox.com/

For music, I recommend:

https://www.dropbox.com/
https://soundcloud.com/
https://www.youtube.com/

Links

A simple way to show people your art/music is to post a link, which can direct users to the URL of your art/music when it is clicked on. For example, posting the following...

Code:
[url]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/82425019/mfgg/TD-avatar.png[/url]

...produces a link, which will direct you to the URL of Thunder Dragon's avatar on the forums when you click on it:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/82425019/mfgg/TD-avatar.png

However, not all links are simply displayed as the URL you will be directed to when you click on it! In some circumstances, you might want to have your link displayed as something else (like a few words, for example). Posting the following, for example...

Code:
[url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn0khIn2wfc]Click me![/url]

...will produce a link, which is displayed as "Click me!", and will direct you to a YouTube video of Super Mario World's overworld theme once you give it a click:

Click me!

Images

A way to show people your art, besides using links, is to simply display it in your posts. As an example, you could post the following...

Code:
[img]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/g0kn88o8cl3gp56/Vitiman%20Shy-Guy_Avatar%20Size.png[/img]

...which will produce VinnyVideo's Shy Guy avatar, which is originally sketched by Thunder Dragon, and later updated by Vitiman:

However, if you are going to post an image that happens to be extremely large, you might not want to just insert it into your post. Because otherwise, the page your image is posted on might get stretched by the image, and/or it could possibly slow down some browsers. There are three ways to fix this problem.

First of all, you can just put the image in a link. Next, you can also use a certain format, which will display an image that is shown in a smaller size, returning back to the original size once you click on it (and vice versa). If you post the following, for example...

Code:
[simg w=95 h=160]http://i.imgur.com/hYiMi99.png[/simg]

...an image of Friendly Dictator's Toilet Mario "sprite", which is scaled down into a width of 95 pixels and a height of 160 pixels, will be produced:

scaled image

Finally, you can hide your art inside a spoiler tag. Doing this will make your art only shown if you click on a button that says "Show Spoiler". For example, if you post the following...

Code:
[spoiler][img]http://i.imgur.com/tIhRNAI.png[/img][/spoiler]

...then Guinea's avatar on the forums, which is hidden until you click on the button below, will be produced:

Spoiler:

Keep in mind, though, that when it comes to art, spoiler tags aren't just used for hiding giant images. Spoiler tags can also be used if your art contains something that might contain spoilers, or something that might not be really appropriate for any of the kids out there that might be browsing through the MFGG forums.

Music

Besides links, there is two different ways you can embed music into your posts. One way to embed music is to use a format, which makes use of HTML5 audio. For example, posting the following...

Code:
[audio]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/101797235/smb3-space-theme.ogg[/audio]

...will produce a bar, which can play a space theme that tries to mimic Super Mario Bros 3's music style, which is made by Vimimin:

However, keep in mind that when you are using the format above, the URL that is used must be the directory of the audio file that you want to show. That means if you are using something like YouTube, which uses URLs that don't really contain the file in it (the file is in the page instead), then the format is pretty much useless.

But, you can use a format that is like the HTML5 audio format, except that it uses audio that is submitted to YouTube. As an example, if you post the following...

Code:
[ayoutube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meok8UzkyDM[/ayoutube]

...then a YouTube bar, which can play Bulby's 8-bit remix of New Super Mario Bros' castle theme, is produced:

Thanks for updating this. Black Squirrel's circa-2010 topic was useful, but it had a lot of dead links and information in need of refreshing.
