I suck at redoing my drawings on a computer program, so I just keep them hand drawn and sometimes outline and color them on paper then scan them in, but most people prefer drawings done on computer programs because they look cleaner.
Also, for the ear, Mario's ear is very simple. It's usually an up-side-down egg shape, but depending on the game it can sometimes just be a semicircle with the top just slightly wider than the bottom (that's usually for the more cartoony artworks of Mario). Your Mario's ear has the bottom wider than the top, which makes it look up-side-down. I think you did the ear well in the pencil sketch.
How are you getting this onto a computer program? Are you tracing over the pencil lines with a brush tool on a program (I don't really know how the transferring process works too well since I rarely do it)? If so, you might just want to go over the ear more carefully and some other parts you don't like and then replace the old ear with the new one.
You pretty much nailed how I'm doing this right on the head.
I'm trying to trace over the photo of the base sketch using the Path Tool in GIMP, what I have learned so far is that it has the potential to make some rather smooth lines, and overall make the drawing look better...well, assuming I can use it properly, proper use of the path tool is something that I still need to learn, obviously.
Thanks for all the advice, I may try some of this.
