Not bad, I'm liking this idea. However, here are some suggestions.

Online games like these die because there are no Events. You should plan events (maybe 1-3 per month) or something. For example, a special level you made suddenly appears in the middle of the main lobby. Inside this example level, it's a stage where it's raining bob-ombs but upon defeating your custom boss, you get an rare item (such as the mega mushroom or golden mushroom). (But can't get it again or something like that.) The level lasts an "X" amount of time before it blows up. <- This is just an example event.
I think you've already said something about shop, right? You know, expensive (and some cheap) items using the coins you got from the levels. For players: use a "justice" system. Green player crystals (float over their head in lobby) = player who committed no crime. Yellow: this player committed a crime or something. Purple: this player has killed another player. [Yes, player vs. player would be cool. Maybe even add a room/mode called "battle" (But if you do, please make it better than smbx. Smbx's was kind of meh and overwhelming...)
You should, just for lulz, allow players to by different "clothes" and skins in shops. Like, let's say you're koopa. You can buy that expensive silver shell from the shop for an X amount of coins. Or goomba, shoes. etc...
Do not forget secrets. Even challenging secrets that will require you to let's say, but that expensive gold spring from the shop (or defeat/kill another player and take his/her items.)
These are only mere suggestions and I have many more, but I'm going to stop here. I have 7 days until I'm off to the Military, so I won't be able to check on this thread much.
Good luck with this project. (This is kind of a pain for a one-man project, so I'd suggest maybe getting at least 1 or two more team members to ease your pain xD)
